Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday marking an incredible Jewish victory over the Greeks, who were persecuting and oppressing the Jews. It is celebrated on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev, and lasts eight days.
Following the victory, the Jews returned to rededicate the Temple, but realized that they only had enough oil to light the menorah for one day. Miraculously, the oil of this small flask lasted for eight days.
As a symbol of this victory and miracle, we light the Hanukkah candles on each of the eight days of Hanukkah.
